Getting to Know: Getting Around Frommer
By Taxi

Distances are long in Los Angeles, and cab fares are high; even a short trip can cost $10 or more. Taxis charge $1.90 at the flag drop, plus $1.60 per mile. A service charge is added to fares originating at LAX.

Except in the heart of downtown, cabs will usually not pull over when hailed. Cabstands are located at airports, at downtown's Union Station, and major hotels. To ensure a ride, order a taxi in advance from Checker Cab (tel. 323/654-8400), L.A. Taxi (tel. 213/627-7000), or United Taxi (tel. 213/483-7604).
